about

My fiance received a bone marrow transplant at the beginning of the year. We stayed at a transplant house near the hospital for the time after the transplant. It was ran by a non-profit and had a few different libraries of donated books that house residents were allowed to take home. In one of these libraries I found the audio book "Silent Treatment" by Michael Palmer. I have no idea what the book is about but I really liked the look of the tapes. I thought about using material I'd already recorded. I couldn't find 90 minutes of material that felt cohesive enough. Like I said, the cassettes looked cool, so I decided I'd work backwards and make an album of noise that looks like it belonged on the tapes.

For this album (like with Collage Works 2020) I made tape-loops from various tapes taped together to make loop "collages". It's kind of hard to describe the process because tapes are used in many of it's stages. I recorded various improvisations onto tapes using my four-track recorder. I then made loops from these tapes. I then ran these loops though a modular synthesizer, which went to the four track again. I had 4 tapes of material made this way, which is where the composition names come from. Four tapes of recordings made from tape-loops made from tape recordings. There were about 2 and a half hours of noise on these tapes, 90 minutes of which are published on this album.
